Question

Test #1 Chapter 1 Explain why the total evapotranspiration over the oceans far exceeds the total evapotranspiration over the continents 2. The drainage area of the Colorado River is about 653,000 km2 and its average annual discharge is about 15 million acre-feet (1.85 × 1010 m3) (Manning 1992). The average precipitation rate in the basin is about 12 inches/year (30.5 cm/yr). Calculate the river discharge divided by the drainage basin area in inches/year (cm/yr). What fraction of the annual precipitation rate is this? What fates, other than ending up in the Colorado River, can precipitated water have in this basin? 3. A groundwater and river basin has an area ot 340 mi (880 km*). Estimates have been made of the average annual rates of precipitation (28 inches/year = 71 cm/yr), stream flow (13 inches/year = 33 cm/yr), and baseflow (6 inches/year = 15 cm/yr). Groundwater that is pumped and exported from the basin totals 1.8 x 109 ft3/year (5.1x 07 m3/yr) Assume that there is zero net flux of groundwater through the basin boundaries. Create a chart like Figure 1.5 illustrating fluxes in the basin. Estimate the average annual rates of the following items: (a) Overland flow +interflow (lump these two) (b) Recharge (c) Evapotranspiration Report your answers in inches/year or cm/yT (think of it as vol- ume/time/basin area)

Explanation / Answer

Drainage area of the river is = 653,000 km2 or 6.53 *1011 m2 (as we know 1km = 1000m)

average precipitation rate is = 12 inches/year OR 30.5 cm/year

Annual discharge = 1.85*1010 m3

so, Rquired value will be = annual discharge /drainage area

= ( 1.85*1010 m3)/6.53*1011 m2

= 0.0283 m/year OR 2.83 cm/year

= 1.114 inches/year (1 inch = 2.54 cm)

Fraction of given average value will be = 2.83/30.5

= 0.092

Other fates for water other than precipitations :

1. Can be treated and used for agriculture purposes

2. Can be developed as river basin for tourism purposes
