5. Consider the mass spectrum below. For each of the following questions, circle the letter corresponding to your answer. (9 points) 100 169 184 186 60 40 51 90 20 75 150 175 m/ z A) What information can be gained about this compound by looking at the mass spectrum? a. Not aromatic b. Contains chlorine c. Contains bromine d. None of the above B) The peak at m/z 169 represents the loss of what fragment from the molecule? a. CH3 b. H2O c. "CH2CH3 d. None of the above C) The base peak appears at the following location a. b, c. d. m/z=186 m/z = 184 m/z= 105 m/z=51

Explanation / Answer

QA) option C

Looking at mass spectrum we can immediately say it contains bromine atom .

The spectrum has every peak followed by +2 peak, including the molecular ion peak

M+ at 184 and M+ +2 at 186 almost in equal abundance . (Br -79 and Br -81 almost in equal ratio in nature)

QB) Option A

As the molecular ion is 184 the peak at 169 comes from 184 -15 , that is M+ - CH3

QC) option a

The base peak is the peak which has 100% abundance , this corresponds to peak at m/z = 106.
