Explanation / Answer

Ans:a) dGreaction= dGB - dGA= 23-(-14)= 37KJ per mole.

Ans:b) A reaction is spontaneous if the products formed possess lesser energy than the reactants but here product B has greater amount of energy than reactant A, therefore the given reaction is non spontaneous.

Ans:c) The transition state lies at the highest point on the curve which corresponds to free energy 45 KJ per mole.

Ans:d) The activation energy corresponds to the difference in the energy between the transition state and the reactant A.

Energy of transition state= 45 KJ per mole

Energy of the reactant A= -14 KJ per mole

Activation Energy= 45-(-14)= 59 KJ per mole

Ans:e) Activation energy of the reverse reaction is the energy difference between the energies of transition state and the product B.

Energy of transition state = 45 KJ per mole

Energy of product B = 23 KJ per mole

Activation energy of reverse reaction = 45-23= 22 KJ per mole

Ans:f) we can draw a new curve for the enzyme catalysed reaction in the same graph. Shape of the new curve will be like the uncatalysed reaction curve. Energies of the reactant A and product B will remain unaltered so the new curve will start from already marked line A and will end at the already marked line B, the highest point of the new curve will lie at 30 KJ per mole and it will be just below the hightest point of the uncatalysed reaction curve.

Ans:g) Activation energy of the catalysed reaction = (Energy of new transition state) - (Energy of reactant A)

Energy of new transition state= 30 KJ per mole

Energy of reactant A= -14 KJ per mole

activation energy for catalysed reaction= 30-(-14)= 44 KJ per mole
