Question
QUESTION 7 1 p Antimony, an element of growing industrial importance, is primarily extracted from the mineral Stibnite. which has a chemical formula Sb253. In 2015. it is estimated that the world-wide production of elemental antimony was 150,000 metric tons (assume 3 significant figures). What mass of stibnite (in kilograms) must have been mined to produce that much elemental antimony? Assume all antimony was etracted directly from the stibnite and that the process was 100% efficient. Also remember that 1 metric ton -10o0 kgExplanation / Answer
Atomic mass of antimony=> 122
Atomic mass of sulphur=> 32
Molecular weight of Sb2S3=> 2*molar mass of antimony + 3* molar mass of sulphur=> 2*122+3*32=> 244+96=> 340 g/mol
So, assuming all antimony was extracted directly from the stibnite and process was 100%efficient then,
for 150,000 metric tons of elemental antimony, mass of stibnite mined=>( 150,000 metric tons /244 )* 340
=> 209.016 metric tons * 1000 kg/ton=> 209.016 * 10 6 kg
