Question
Observations will be a key part of your experiment. During the reaction, white crystals forming in the bottom of your test tube (white crystals crashing out of solution) indicates:
1. You did not add enough HCl solution.
2. You did not follow the procedure correctly.
3. The product is forming and since it is insoluble in water, it is forming as a solid in the bottom of the test tube.
4. Your water bath temperature is too low
5. Your water bath temperature is too high
During the heating of maleic acid you are suppose to form a clear solution than white crystals will be formed, so I would think it would be 3.
Explanation / Answer
According to me, the answer would be 5 as white crystal formation indicates the formation of maleic anhydride which is only possible when the temperature of the bath is too high.
Maleic anhydride is a white colorless crystal having a pungent odor.
