Please show all of your work to receive full credit. 1. Water gas, a mixture of H and CO, is an important industrial fuel produced by the reaction of steam with red hot coke, essentially pure carbon, C(s) + H2O(g) CO(g) + H2(g) H = 13 1.30 kJ (a) Write the expression for Kc for the reversible reaction. (b) Predict the changes by the Le Chatelier's Principle Shift of Mass of CIH:O col H2 Disturbance at equilibrium equilibrium (increase or (increase orincrease or (increase or (left /right) decrease decrease decrease) decrease) More C is added H20 is removed CO is added Increase the temperature Increase the volume Inert gas argon is added into constant volume A catalyst is addedExplanation / Answer
C(s) + H2O(g) ------------> CO(g) + H2(g)
Q1) Kc = [CO]{H2] /[H2O]
As C is a solid its concentraion is unity .
Q2)
1) More c is added
No change in equilibrium - [C] = same [H2O] same , [CO] and [H2] no change
2) H2O is removed.As the reactant is removed, the equillibrium shifts left ,reactant side.
[H2O] increases, [CO] and [H2] decrease.
3)CO is added.
As the product is added, the equilibrium shifts left.
[H2O] increases, [CO] and [H2] decrease.
4)Increase the temperature
as the reaction is endothermic , (delta H positive) , the equilibrium shift s right.
Thus [C], [H2O] decrease and [H2] and [CO] increase.
5) increase in volume
As the concentrationper unit volume of reactants and products both decrease, but
from Kc, expression
Kc = [CO][H2] /[H2O]
as volume increases, the equilibrium shifts right side.and concentrations of reactants[H2o] and [C] decreases and products [CO] and [H2] increases.
e) addition of inert gas at constant volume does not change the equilibrium positions.
so concentrations remain same.
f) addition of catalyst also does not alter the position of equilibrium.
Thus all concentrations remain constant.
So no change in equilibrium concentrations.
