Question
Your friend has three unlabeled vials. One of the vials contains (2R,3S)-2,3 dibromoheptane. Another contains (2S, 3R)-2,3-dibromoheptane. The last vial contains (2S,3S)-2,3-dibromoheptane. Your friend proposes taking the boiling point of the liquid in each vial in order to identify which of the three chemicals it is. You know that it is only possible to identify one of the chemicals using boiling point. Two of them will have the same boiling point. a. Which chemical can be identified by boiling point (has a boiling point different from the others) b. Convince your friend that the remaining two chemicals will have the same boiling point. Provide enough detail for them to understand why this would occur.Explanation / Answer
(2R,3S)-2,3-dibromoheptane and (2S,3R)-2,3-dibromoheptane are enantiomers. But (2S,3S)-2,3-dibromoheptane is diastereomer of those two isomer. So from this, the 3rd one have different boiling point from 1st two.a)So (2S,3S)-2,3-dibromoheptane identified by boiling point.
b) Because 1st two are enantiomer with each other,so they have similar physical and chemical property. So these two have same boiling point. So it can't differentiate by boiling point
