The procedure is as follows:
1. In an oven dried 25 mL. round bottom flask, take 6 mL. of dodecanol using a 10 mL. syringe.
2. Weigh 375 mg of Stearic acid using an analytical balance and transfer the whole amount to the flask at a time.
3. Stir the mixture for two minutes.
4. Now add 100 microlitres of concentrated sulfuric acid using a microlitre syringe to the mixture.
5. Set a reflux condensor to the mouth of the flask and set the flask inside an oil-bath.
6. Now, set the system to reflux with continous stirring (magnetic stir bar)
7. Continue refluxing for 16 hours.
8. After 16 hours, cool the reaction mixture at room temperature.
9. After the reaction mixture comes to room temperature, transfer it completely in a separating funnel and extract it with 5% NaHCO3 solution (three times, 3*10 mL. solution)
10. Collect the organic layer in a clean conical flask and add anhydrous sodium sulfate to it for drying.
11. Filter the solution using a buchner funnel and collect the filtrate (organic layer). Evaporate the solvent using a rotatory evaporator to collect a solid mass. This is your crude product (the ester)
12. Recrystallise the crude product from toluene to obtain the pure product.
