Question

Exp &: Exploring the Properties of Gases 5. In each part of the experiment, you will investigate the relationship between two of the four possible variables, the other two being constant. In this pre-lab exercise, sketch a graph that describes your hypothesis as to the mathematical relationship between the two variables; e.g., direct relationship or inverse relationship. Part I Pressure (P) and volume (V) (temperature and quantity are constant). Part II Pressure (P) and absolute temperature (T) (volume and quantity are constant). Part III Volume (V) and absolute temperature (T) (pressure and quantity are constant) Part IV Pressure (P) and quantity (n) (volume and absolute temperature are constant) 6. For each part of the experiment, describe what you will observe for each of the relationships that you graphed in number 5

Explanation / Answer

PART 1:

PV = K

therefore, they are indirectly proportional

since K is constant, so increas in P is a decrease in V and vice versa

Part 2:

P vs. T is proportional

P/T = K

or

P = K*T

then, incrase in P is an increase in T

PART 3

V vs. T

V /T = K

so

V = K*T

meaning that an increase in T, is an increase in V, direclty proportional

PART IV

P vs. n

P/n = K

P = K*n

then

direclty proportional, increase in P, increases n
