Question
10/30/2015 O7, (15 points) When a certain quantity of sucrose is burned in a constant pressure calorime Chemistry 3150 Assessment 1 Page 7 of 10 ter, the temperatur of the water rises by 30 K. The combusion reaction is represented by the following CallnOn (s) + 1202 (g) 1200, (g) + 1111,0 (1) (a) (5 points) Is the combusion of sucrose endothermic or exothermic? (b) (6 points) If the calibrated heat capacity of the calorimeter is Go J/K, what is the heat associated with the combustion? () (5 points) What is the change in enthalpy aesociated with the combustion of this quantity of sucrose? Show your work!Explanation / Answer
Ans
a) Since the temperature of the water has risen by 30 K , we understand that the heat id given off in the reaction at products side. Now as the reaction has negative enthalpy for the reaction , so the reaction is exothermic reaction.
b) The heat capacity associated with calorimeter is 60J/K
And the rise in temperature is 30 K
So the heat associated with the combustion will be :
=30 x 60
= 1800 J
c) The change in enthalpy or Delta H is calculated by subtracting the total enthalpy of reactants from that of products.
Since the reaction is exothermic , and gives off 1800 J of heat,
the enthalpy change for the reaction will be -1800 J
