My Blackboard Homepage Community Content Collecti Of the bonds below, aich one is the least polar? Na and S P and S °Cand F O Si and Ci each hydrogen has one nonbonding electron pairs QUESTION 5 Consider the C-H bond, is this bond polar? Why? O yes-because the atoms have the same electronegativity. O yes-because the difference in electronegativity of these elements is 0.4. O no - because the atoms have the same electronegativity O no- because the difference in electronegativity of these elements is 0.4 QUESTION 6 Consider the C-C bond, is this bond polar? Why? Explanation / Answer

If the electronegative difference between bonded atoms is small, then the bond between the atoms is less polar.

In gerenal, ionic bond is more polar and covalent bond is less polar.

The bond between metal and non-metal is ionic and the bond between non-metals is covalent.

Metallic character decreases form left to right in a row of the periodic table.

Metallic character increased from top to bottom in a grop of the periodic table,.

Na and S:

Electronegativity value (EN) of Na is 0.9 and Electronegativity value of S is 2.5.

Difference = 2.5 - 0.9 = 1.6

P and S:

Electronegativity value of P is 2.1 and electronegativity value of S is 2.5

Difference = 2.5 - 2.1 = 0.4

C and F:

EN for C is 2.5 and EN for F is 4.0

Difference = 4.0 - 2.5 = 1.5

Si and Cl:

EN for Si is 1.8 and EN for Cl is 3.0

Difference = 3.0 - 1.8 = 1.2

Each hydrogen has one nonbonding electron pair:

So, both the hydrogen atoms are charged as they have electron pairs. Bond between the charged specis is more polar. Here, both hydrogne atoms are negatively charged, so no bond between hydrogen atoms.

Since the electronegativity differecne between P and S is the smallest, the bond between P and S is the least polar.
