Question

FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION/ GC Lab Name: Section: Referring to the NTST website tt/webbook.nist.govichemistry), would you recommend simple or fractional distillation to separate a mixture of eyclobexane and toluene Explain your selection Flass ookds 2. What is the role of them in efactionating column used in our fractional distillation? Class Beads Compare the column packing used in the GC to the ppen How are they similar? How are they different? in the fractionating column . What is the effect of the following on retention time seen in the GC? a. Increases in flow rate of carrier gas. b. Increases in temperature of the column c. Increasing the polarity of the packing. Recording paper is moving at the rate 2.0 in/min, what are the retention times of the peaks that appear at: a. 12.0 in b. 2.5 cm

Explanation / Answer

1) Boiling point of, Cyclohexane is 353.9 K and Toluene is 383.8 K.

In Celsius scale boiling point of, Cyclohexane is 80.9 °C and Toluene is 110.8 °C

Boiling point difference in boiling points =110.8 °C - 80.9 °C = 29.9 °C

Fractional distillation is a used to separate two miscible liquids that have boiling point difference of less than 25 ºC. Difference in boiling point of cyclohexane and toluene is greater than25 ºC under a pressure of one atmosphere, so I would recommend simple distillation method to separate cyclohexane and toluene.

2) Glass beads provide a large surface area for vaporization and condensation of the liquid mixture in fractional distillation column. Glass beads create a steeper, smoother temperature gradient by interrupting the flow of vapor by convection.
