We know gas was produced in the lactose and sucrose broth if the tube changed from red to yellow. gas is a byproduct of glucose fermentation, and lactose and sucrose are polysaccharides that are later broken down into glucose and another monomer. If color change from red-yellow is indicative of fermentation, then subsequently gas was produced in the lactose and sucrose broths as well.

It is highly impossible to detect the presence of gas without Durham tube. pH indicators are used to check for the accumulation of acid or alkaline products after fermentation.
