The chart below lists vapor pressure data for water, toluene, and xylene. Use this data to answer the questions 7-9 Temperature Pizo (mmHg) 355 417 487 589 658 760 906 1075 1268 1490 1742 2028 2351 2714 3037 Ptoluene (mmHg) 291 334 381 448 492 556 646 747 859 985 1124 1278 1449 1636 1798 Paylene mmHg) 102 119 137 164 182 208 245 286 334 388 448 515 590 673 746 80 84 93 96 100 105 110 115 120 125 130 135 140 144 7. A liquid boils when its vapor pressure is equal to atmospheric pressure. If the atmospheric pressure is 750 mmHg, what is the approximate boiling point of each of the following pure substances? water toluene xvlene 8. What is the boiling point of a mixture of toluene and water when the atmospheric pressure is 750 mmHg? Show your work or explain how you arrived at your answer How does this temperature compare to the boiling points of these two pure substances? 9. Repeat question 8 for a water-xylene mixture (also immiscible)

Explanation / Answer

7. It is given that the liquid boils when the vapour pressure is equal to the atmospheric pressure. Also, given atmospheric pressure is 750 mmHg.

Now, from the table we see that at 760, 747 and 746 mmHg vapour pressure of water, toluene and xylene the temperature is 100, 110 and 144 oC respectively.

Therefore the boiling point of H2O at 750 mmHg is less than 100 oC,

boiling point of toluene at 750 mmHg is slightly more than 110 oC and

boiling point of toluene at 750 mmHg is slightly more than 144 oC.
