3. Glucose reacts with oxygen in the presence of various proteins in the body to generate carbon dioxide and water. This combustion or oxidation reaction is exothermic and so energy is released during the reaction. This energy is used to bind a phosphate molecule to ADP, forming ATP - the energy unit of cells. This entire process can be represented in chemical equation as:

C6H12O6 + 6O2 -----> 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy

Carbohydrates can be seen as polymeric forms with glucose or any such sugar molecule as their monomers. Thus, the oxidation of carbohydrates containing "n" units of any sugar molecule with "m" water molecules condensed in them can be represented as:

n(C6H12O6)m(H2O) + 6nO2 -----> 6n(CO2) + 6n+m(H2O) + n(Energy)
