Name: Lab Section: Experiment 10 Post Lab Question The following passage is a narrative description of experimental results for an unknown metal solution. Use your data for lab 10 to evaluate these results and identify the unknown metal, Write a brief conclusion (-100 words) stating your your conclusion. You may write this justification below or attach a typed page. conclusion and outlining the reasoning/justification for A portion of the unknown metal was digested using hot, concentrated nitric acid and dried to yield the metal nitrate salt. A 0.10M solution of this salt and tested using six 0.2M chemical spot test reagents: potassium chromate. sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide, ammonium and sodium phosphate. Reaction with chromate and hydroxide yielded orange precipitates. Reaction with sulfide and ammonium hydroxide yielded brown precipitates. Reaction with phosphate yielded a yellow precipitate. No visible reaction was observed with chloride. Identity of unknown metal: Narrative Explanation annver to this question should be attached to page 75/76Explanation / Answer
The above mentioned Lab experiment states that when a Metal (M) is digested with HNO3, it gives following products when it is treated in 1:2 molar concentration respectively.
(a) MNO3+K2CrO3===MCrO3 (Orannge ppt)
(b) MNO3+Nacl====No visible reaction
(c) MNO3+NaOH====MOH (orange ppt)
(d) MNO3+Na2S====MS (Brown ppt)
(e) MNO3+NH4OH====M(OH)2 (Brown ppt)
(f) MNO3+Na2PO3====MPO3 (Yellow ppt)
From the above stated reactions and colours it is infered that the metal is Iron.
