Data report and discussion Part I Exothermic and endothermic reaction 1.1 Initial temperature Final temperature NH4NOs CaCl Temperature change 1.2 NH4NO CaClz 1.3 To each equation, add the term "Heat" on the side of the reactants (if endothermic) or on the side of the products (if exothermic). H-O NH4NO3(s) NH'(aq) + NO'(aq) Q1. When you burn a log in the fireplace, is the reaction endothermic or exothermic? Q2·The effect on the surroundings due to two different chemical reactions is shown below. Reaction Effect on its surroundings It becomes cooler B It becomes warmer Which of the following conclusions is correct based on the information provided? A. Reaction A is endothermic while reaction B is exothermic B. Both reactions are exothermic. C. Both reactions are endothermic. D. Reaction A is exothermic while reaction B is endothermic. E. There is not enough information to draw a conclusion.

Explanation / Answer

1.When we burn a log in the fire place then large amount of energy is liberated in the form of heat and light .Due to which we can also say large amount of heat energy is liberated when we burn a log.Since heat is released in this case , it is exothermic reaction.

2.A is endothermic because it is absorbing heat from the surroundings making it cool and we know in any chemical reaction if heat energy is absorbed , then it is endothermic reaction. B is exothermic , as it is large amount if heat energy to the surroundings making it hot ir warm and we know that in any chemical reaction when heat energy is released , it is always exothermic.
