Question

Consider a new transition metal complex, cobalt (II) chloride hexahydrate. This compound undergoes a similar reaction to the copper complex that you analyzed in lab. When cobalt (II) chloride hexahydrate is heated, it changes from magenta crystals to a sky blue powder.

a) As a result of this change, what part of the compound has been removed?

The hydrate portion of the compound has been removed. (THis is what I think the answer is)

b) Write the chemical reaction for this process. (I am not sure how to go about this)

Explanation / Answer

a) cobalt (II) chloride hexahydrate when heated undegoes dehydration reaction i.e. it losses all the six water molecules as a result the color changes from magenta crystals to a sky blue.

b) Co(II)Cl2. 6H2O (on heating) ----------> Co(II)Cl2 + 6 H2O

magenta sky blue
