Question

alculate the % composition for Aluminum Cyanide AI(CN) : 3-1.YZ/iesx00 .. "Oy OS 6. An ideal gas is contained in a cylinder with a volume of 500 ml at a temperature of 30 C and a pressure of 700 torr. The gas is compressed to a volume of 300 ml and the pressure is increased to 850 torr. What is the new Temperature? 7. How many liters of oxygen at STP are required to react with 100 g of Hexane C H 8, A 5.50 L volume of gas has a pressure of 1.50 atm at 25°C. what is the pressure if the volume decreases to 4.25 L and the temperature decreases to 0°C?

Explanation / Answer

5) % composition of Aluminium cyanide:

  Aluminium cyanide = Al(CN)3

molar mass of Al(CN)3 = 105

Al(CN)3 = Al + 3C + 3N

molar mass of Al = 27

molar mass of C = 12

molar mass of N = 14

Therefore,

% of Al = [ molar mass of Al/ molar mass of Al(CN)3 ] X 100

= [ 27/ 105 ] X 100

= 25.71 %

% of C = [ molar mass of 3 carbons/ molar mass of Al(CN)3 ] X 100

= [ 3x12/ 105 ] X 100

= 34.29 %

% of N = [ molar mass of 3 N/ molar mass of Al(CN)3 ] X 100

= [ 3 x14 / 105 ] X 100

= 40 %

6)

Initial conditions of gas:

Pressure P1 = 700 torr

Volume V1 = 500 ml

Temperature T1 = 30oC = 30 + 273 K = 303 K

Final conditions of gas:

Pressure P2 = 850 torr

Volume V2 = 300 ml

Temperature T2 = ?

We know that P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2

T2 = (P2V2) x (T1/P1V1)

                           = ( 850 torr x 300 ml) x ( 303K/ 700 torr x 500 ml)

                          = 220.7 K

= 220.7 - 273 oC

= - 52.3 oC

Therefore,

New temperature =  - 52.3 oC
