The electron configuration of the element Ununpentium is predicted to be [Rn]5f14 6d10 7s2 7p3. Hence, its valence shell has 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p3 configuration. With an outermost half-filled p-orbital, when two electrons are removed, UUp2+ would have an electronic configuration of [Rn]5f14 6d10 7s2 7p1. If three more electrons are to be removed, it will be done from the 7p orbital as well as the 7s orbital giving a configuration of [Rn]5f14 6d10 7s0 7p0. or [Rn]5f14 6d10 for Uup5+. The order of electron removal from orbitals depends upon the energy of the orbitals as given by Aufbau's principle which gives 7p orbital more energy than 7s orbital. Aufbau Principle can be seen as a result of quantum mechanical implications on the energies of electrons residing in those orbitals and thus the orbitals themselves. In case of electron filling up, the orbitals in increasing energy order is filled. On the reverse, orbitals with higher energies get removed of electrons first. This can be explained by the effect of nucleus on the outermost electrons which reside in the highest energy orbital for that atom being quite negligible. Summing up all these, the configurations of Uup2+ and Uup5+ are given.
