Question
The following data is collected for compound A: Compound A is composed of C, H and O and is found to contain 79.98% C and 4.79% H. Proton NMR of compound A shows 3 peaks between 7 and 8 ppm. Carbon NMR of compound A shows 4 peaks between 110 and 130 ppm and a peak at 194.5 ppm. The following data is collected for compound B: .Compound B is also composed of C, H and O and is found to contain 85.68% C and 6.71% H. Proton NMR of compound A shows 3 peaks between 7 and 8 ppm and a singlet at 3.70 ppm. Carbon NMR of compound B shows 4 peaks between 110 and 130 ppm and peaks at 205 ppm and 49 ppm. Identify compounds A and B as well as the aldol product that would form between them.Explanation / Answer
From the given information, we found that compound A is Benzaldehyde and compound B is Acetophenone.
In Compound A, for carbon we are getting total 5 peaks, 4 peaks between 110-130 ppm, and one peak at 194.5 ppm. IN aromatic ring carbon givea peak between 110-130 ppm and peak of aldehyde comes at 194.5 ppm. And for hydrogen, total 3 peaks are there which are between 7-8 ppm. In aromatic ring, peaks of hydrogen comes between 7-8 ppm.
In Compound B, total carbon peaks are 6. 4 peaks between 100-130 ppm, same one aromatic ring is present. 205 ppm peak is for C=O and C-C peak is at 49 ppm. Now for hydrogen, total 3 peaks are there and one singlet is present at 3.70 ppm. So three peaks are for aromatic ring hydrogen and one singlet peak is for -CH3 peak.
