Question
1. In the process of nylon preparation, NaOH was added to the reaction mixture even though it does not appear in the equation for the preparation of nylon. What function does the NaOH have in the process? (Hint: Consider all the products of the nylon reaction.) 2. How many 1,6-diaminohexane monomers and adipoyl chloride monomers are required to make a nylon polymer with a formula weight of 15,000 amu? (As shown in the introduction, one repeat unit consists of the condensation product of one adipoyl chloride molecule and one diaminohexane molecule.)Explanation / Answer
Ans 1 :
In the synthesis of Nylon 6,6 , sebacoyl chloride reacts with hexamethylenediamine to give Nylon 6,6 as the major organic product and HCl as the byproduct. Since HCl is acid , NaOH is added in the reaction , so that it's acidity can be neutralised and the mixture becomes neutral again. So now H2O is formed as the byproduct in the reaction.
