Question
Compare the average molar enthalpies of neutralization obtained for the reactions of strong acids with NaOH with those found for weak acids with NaOH. Comment on the results (i.e. are they the same or different). Also comment on how these results compare to the enthalpy of reaction calculated for H+ (aq)OH (aq) H20(l) (see question 5a). (3 pts.) Compare the class average values for the molar reaction enthalpy for the reactions of the metal +HCI with the values predicted from the tabulated heats of formation (see question 5b and 5c). (3 pts.) 7.Explanation / Answer
Note that the values are pretty near
since the NET ionic equatino is the same for any acid/base
H+ + OH- = H2O(l)
which is the formation of water via hydroxide and protons addition
Therefore
Ca(OH)2 + 2HNO3
HCl + NaOH all have the same vlaue based per unit mol
