Question

The Solvay process for the manufacture of sodium carbonate begins by passing ammonia and carbon dioxide through a solution of sodium chloride to make sodium bicarbonate and ammonium chloride. The equation for this reaction is H2O + NaCl + NH3 + CO2 right-arrow NH4Cl + NaHCO3 In the next step, sodium bicarbonate is heated to give sodium carbonate and two gases, carbon dioxide and steam. 2NaHCO3 right-arrow Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O

What is the theoretical yield of sodium carbonate, expressed in grams, if 141 g of NaCl were used in the first reaction?

g sodium carbonate

If 76.5 g of Na2CO3 was obtained, what was the percentage yield?

% yield

Explanation / Answer

reaction = first step - H2O + NaCl + NH3 + CO2 ---> NH4Cl + NaHCO3

second step - 2NaHCO3 ---> Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O

mole of NaCl = mole of NaHCO3 = 1/2 mole of Na2CO3

mole of NaCl = 141/58.5 = 3.972

mole of Na2CO3 = 1.986

theoretical yield of sodium carbonate = 1.986 x 106 = 210.516 g

now percentage yield = (76.5 /210.516) x 100

= 36.34 %
