Question

Why is acetone used to rinse the original beaker and to wash the solid compound on the Buchner funnel? In Step 5 of the Procedure section below, why are you adding calcium sulfate to the solution in the Component B flask? Toremove the bottom layer, slowly open the stopcock and drain the bottom layer to into the flask labeled Component B. Be especially careful when you reach the interface of the two liquids; it is important to remove only the bottom layer from the funnel without including ANY of the top layer. It is better to leave a drop of the bottom layer with the top layer than the opposite. Transfer the top layer to the beaker labeled Component C. Transfer the contents of the Component B flask back into the separatory funnel; make sure the stopcock is closed. Repeat the extraction in the previous step one more time using a fresh 5-mL portion of 5% sodium bicarbonate solution. Collect the bottom layer in the now empty Component B flask; again, do not take any of the top layer. Transfer the remaining solution in the separatory funnel to the Component C beaker. To the solution in the Component B flask, add a half scoopful of calcium sulfate pellets (20-25), and cover the flask with aluminum foil. Set the two samples aside in your bench hood Based on solubility data what solvent and unknowns are contained in the Component B flask? The Component C beaker? 5.

Explanation / Answer

Experiment

Acetone is used to rinse the original flask to ensure that all of compounds has been transferred to the buchener funnel when filtration is done. It is also added to the solid compound to wash the solid with any filtrate left in it. Filtrate component dissolves in acetone and gets carried away to the filtration flask below and to give pure solid product.

Calcium sulfate is a drying agent. It is added to the solution to ensure any water left in solution is absorbed by calcium sulfate. Clean and dry organic layer is obtained at this stage.
