Question
Explain your observations based on LeChatlier’s Principle A. Methyl violet in water: HMV(aq) yellow violet 1. Color of methyl violet in water Vi 2. Color after addition oflici blu? Ida,K 3. Color after addition of NaOH 4. Explain your observation based on equation (I and LeChatlier's Principle B. Potassium chromate in acid: 2CrO42-(aq) + 2H+(aq) CrO72-(aq) + H2O (1) 1. Color of K2Cr04 and H2SO4 01d 2. Color after addition of NaOH lo 3. Color after addition of more Hs04 OLana 4. Interpret your results in terms of equation (I) and LeChatelier's Principle.Explanation / Answer
1) When Methyl violet is added to water it ionizes to form MV- anion which is violet in color
2) Addition of HCl, increases the concentration of product ions(H+) and shifts the reaction backward
3) Addition of NaOH, removes the H+ ions from product side and shifts the reaction forward and hence violet color deepens
1) When K2Cr2O4 is mixed with acid it forms dichromate anion which is orange in color
2) Addition of NaOH, removes the H+ ions from reactant side and shifts the reaction backward and forms K2Cr2O4 which has yellow color
3) Addition of more H2SO4, increases the concentration of reactant ions(H+) and shifts the reaction forward and forms more Cr2O7^2- ions and hence orange color increases
