Question
You are mixing "fruit punch" for a chemistry party (hence the metric system). Each bowl of fruit punch must contain exactly 2.5 L of pineapple juice, 3.5 L of orange juice, and 750 mL of clear soda. You are given a total of 38.5 L of pineapple juice, 55 L of orange juice and 14 L of clear soda and asked to make as many bowls of punch as you can. While transporting the bowls of punch to the party, you accidentally spill three bowls losing all of their contents. Considering how many bowls you originally made, what is your precent yield after spilling the three bowls?
Explanation / Answer
Total amount of pineapple juice=38.5 L .So,
Number of bowls that can be prepared from this juice=38.5÷2.5=15.4~15
Now,t oral amount of orange juice=55L.So,
Number of bowls that can be prepared=55÷3.5=15.7~15
Total amount of clear soda = 14 L =14000 mL.So,
The number of clear soda bowls=14000÷750=18.67~18.
Since all the bowls should have exactly the same composition of all the three given materials. So,the total number of bowls originally made will be 15.
Now, three bowls lost all their content out of 15 bowls.
So, percent yield=remaining bowls/total bowls ×100
= 12/15 ×100=80%
