People use soaps and surfactants when washing, because washing requires three major energy sources, which include temperature, chemical and mechanical. The temperature (hot water) and mechanical strength will be provided by the machine, but we need to provide chemical sources, like soaps and surfactants for proper stain removal.

The soaps and surfactants have molecules with hydrophobic and hydrophilic portions. For example, the soap contains sodium stearate, the sodium has hydrophilic nature and stearate has hydrophobic nature. If a cloth has an oil stain, so the hydrophobic portions surfactants interact with the oil stain and remove it from the fabric surface. The hydrophobic groups traps the oil stains and from the micelles and stops further binding of stain to fabric.
