Question
4. In Parts A.2 or B.1, if the solution is too acidic, the tris-bipyridyliron(I) complex will not form Considering the properties of ligands in general, why might the bipyridyl ligand will not bond to the iron(II) in the acidic solution? 5. In the determination of the formula KwFe lC,0M(H2O), the stoichiometric point was surpassed in determining the oxalate ion concentration using permanganate ion as the titrant. If the iron(III) concentration was determined accurately, how will the error affect the value of w n the formula?Explanation / Answer
4. In the presence of acidic medium, the bipyridyl ligands get protonated and the tendency to bind with iron(II) ion will decrease and the formation of the complex will not occur in the case of the acidic medium.
5. If the mass percentage of oxalate ion concentration exceeds, it will decrease the concentration of potassium ions. As we are calculated the mass percentage of potassium by just substrated the mass percentage of iron(III) ion, oxalate ion, and water. The mass percent of potassium is calculated to be lower than that of actual value. Hence the value of w will be lower than the accepted value.
