Question

please explain in words how you got your answer.

Solution C: This solution is 0.20 M malonic acid (H2C3H,04) and 0.026 M MnSO,. How many grams of each solid reagent are required to prepare 100 mL of this solution? Show your calculations on the report sheet. It is easiest to prepare this solution by dissolving the calculated amount of each solid in 40 mL of water, then adding the two solutions to the 100 mL volumetric flask. Rinse each beaker with about 5 mL of distilled water and add the rinsings to the volumetric flask. Fill the volumetric flask up to the mark and then cap and invert several times to mix.

Explanation / Answer

First you understand whate is mean by Molarity

Molarity is defined as no of moles of solute per liter of solution

Therefore,

0.20M malonic acid means 0.20 mole of malonic acid in 1Liter (1000ml)

0.026M MnSO4 means 0.026 mole of MnSO4 in 1Liter

Volume of our target solution is 100ml

Therefore,

No of mole of Malonic acid required =( 0.20 mole/1000ml)×100ml = 0.020mole

No of mole MnSO4 required = (0.026mol/1000ml)×100ml) = 0.0026mole

Now, you have to understand the concept of mole

1mole = 6.022×1023 no of molecules / atoms / ions

mass of this much no of molecules/atoms/ ions is called molar mass, so

No of mole of solute= Mass of solute /molar mass of solute

mass of solute = No of mole of solute × molar mass of solute

molar mass of our solutes are

Molar mass of Malonic acid = 104.06g/mol

Molar mass of MnSO4 = 151.001g/mol

we already calculated no of moles requred for each solute

Therefore,

Mass of Malonic acid required = 0.020mol × 104.06g/mol = 2.0812g

Mass of MnSO4 required = 0.0026mol × 151.001g/mol =0.3926g
