Question
1) Name four factors that are under the control of a scientist when he or she wants to increase the rate of a reaction. 2) As scientist, we often talk about wanting to speed reactions up. Can you think, however, of any reactions that you might rather slow down than speed up? Can you imagine any way to use the factors from the previous question to help you control the specific reaction you want to slow down? 3) You have an important project due tomorrow and you are trying to use every free second to put on the finishing touches. Whenever possible, you also rush through your typical daily tasks and responsibilities. Which of the following has associated with it a time constraint that is under your control and can be adjusted safely: showering, driving to school, math class, eating lunch, doctors appointment and grocery shopping. Briefly explain your answer. PRE-LABORATORY EXERCISES . Name four factors that are under the control of a scientist when he or she wants to increase the rate of a reaction. 2. Briefly explain your answers. 4. A living cell must accomplish many complicated chemical tasks. Our bodies contain countless enzymes that are used to speed up otherwise slow reactions. Knowing that enzymes are a type of catalyst, which of the following factors is effected by the presence of an enzyme: the energy of the reactants, the energy of the products, the energy of the transition state, the likelihood of a collision with the correct orientation, or the temperature of the reaction. Briefly explain your answer(s). 23-9Explanation / Answer
1) Four factors that can be controlled while increasing the rate of a chemical reaction:
i) Increasing the concentration of reactants
This increases the number of molecules available for collision and reacting with each other forming new compounds
2) Increasing the surface area of solid reactant:
The molecules available in the surface of solid reactants only are available for collision with the molecules of other reactants for reacting purpose,Thus ,increasing the surface area increases the reaction rate
3)Effect of changing temperatures:
In endothermic reactions, increasing temperature increses the kinetic energy of reactant molecules that starts colliding and reacting rapidly with other molecules. This helps the molecules to reach its activation energy at a faster rate, due to raised energy of the system
In exothermic reactions, however increasing temperature can cause the product molecules to reach their activation energy range and collide back to give the reactants. That leads to increased reverse reaction rate,or decreases rate of a reaction
4) Adding a catalyst:
Catalysts lowers the activation energy and the orientation of molecules available for collisions to react by providing an alternative pathway for the reaction. They increases the rate of the chemical reaction
