Question

alculate the vapor pressures of the following Ideal solutions at 20.0 c a. A solution of 0.3000 moles of benzene, CoHe contains 0.0100 moles of naphthalene, CoHa Benzene is a volatile liquid with a vapor pressure at 20.0°C of 75.00 mmHg. The vapor pressure of napthalene can be neglected. Napthalene is a molecular substance. b. A solution of 0.300 moles benzene, CHo, is mixed with 0.200 moles toluene,CoHsCH3 Benzene has a vapor pressure at 20.0°C of 75.0 mmHg and toluene has a vapor pressure at 20.0°C of 22.0 mmHg.

Explanation / Answer

Ans 6

Part a

Lets C6H6 = A

C10H18 = B

Total Moles = 0.3 + 0.01 = 0.31 mmHg

XA = 0.3/0.31 = 0.9677

From the Raoult’s law , total vapor pressure

P = XA * pA* + XB * pB*

P = 0.9677 * 75 + (1-0.9677) * 0

P = 72.5775 mmHg

Part b

Lets C6H6 = A

C6H5CH3 = C

Total Moles = 0.3+ 0.2 = 0.5

XA = 0.3/0.5 = 0.6

From the Raoult’s law , total vapor pressure

P = XA * pA* + XC * pC*

P = 0.6 * 75 + (1-0.6) * 22

P = 53.8 mmHg
