1. As a reaction proceeds, the concentration of the reactants decreases.

For example, let us take the reaction:

aA + bB -----> cC + dD

the rate of this reaction can be written as-

rA = -k[A]a[B]b

Now we can see clearly that as the concentration of the reactants decreases, the driving force of the reaction reduces and hence the reaction rate decreases.
