Question
Consider the following chemical system at equilibrium:
2NOCl (g) = 2NO (g) + Cl2 (g)
Delta H = +77.4 kJ/mol
Predict the direction of the shift in equilibrium when the following changes are made.
a) Some NOCl is removed from the equilibrium mixture
b) The reaction vessel is placed in a hot water bath
c) NO (g) is added to the reaction vessel
d) Cl (g) is removed from the reaction vessel
e) Helium gas is added to the reaction vessel to increase the total pressure
f) The volume of the container was decreased, thus increasing the pressure of each gas
Explanation / Answer
a) Reaction will shift towards left. so as to produce NOCl so as to maintain the equilibrium..
b)Reaction will sgift towards right. as heat will be absorbed by NOCl.
c)Reaction will shift towards left , as extra NO will be used to maintain equilibrium..
d)Reaction will shift towrds right so as to produce required cl2 once again if remived to maintain equilibrium.
e)Nothing will happen as he being unreactive will not disturb the equilibrium.
f)when volume is decreased , equilibrium will shift tords the side where it has lesser gas molecules...ie, towrds left...
