Question
Consider the reaction 2 A + 3 B 4 C
1. If [A] / t is equal to -6.5x10-2 M, what is [B]/ t?
2. If [A] / t is equal to -6.5x10-2 M, what is [C]/ t?
3. Species “A” is a colored compound that participates in the following reaction: A + B --> AB. A researcher studying this reaction by measuring the change in its absorbance over time finds the line tangent to the first few data points has a slope of -0.540/min. if “A” has a molar absorptivity of 383 M-1cm-1, what is the reaction rate in M/min? 1 cm cuvettes were used.
Please type answers, I have a very difficult time reading scanned handwriting. Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
The given reaction is
2 A + 3 B ---------> 4 C
The rate of the reaction is given as
Rate of reaction = rate of disappearance of A = rate of disappearance of B = rate of appearance of C.
Rate of disappearance of A = - ½ d[A]/dt
Rate of disappearance of B = -1/3d[B]/dt
Rate of appearance of C = ¼*d[C]/dt
Therefore, rate of the reaction = -1/2*d[A]/dt = -1/3*d[B]/dt = ¼*d[C]/dt
1) Given d[A]/dt = -6.5*10-2 M, we must have rate of the reaction = - ½ d[A]/dt = - ½ *(-6.50*10-2 M)
=====> rate of the reaction = 3.25*10-5 M.
Again, rate of the reaction = - 1/3*d[B]dt
=====> 3.25*10-5 M = -1/3*d[B]/dt
=====> d[B]/dt = -3*3.25*10-5 M = -9.75*10-5 M (ans).
2) Again, rate of the reaction = ¼ d[C]/dt
=====> 3.25*10-5 M = ¼ d[C]/dt
=====> d[C]/dt = 4*3.25*10-5 M = 13.00 M (ans).
