From the results of this analysis, calculate the percentage composition of the unknown solid. b. Determine the empirical formula of the unknown solid.

Since only CO2 and H2O were produced, this means that the unknown solid is a hydrocarbon.

Moles of CO2 produced = Mass/MW = 0.02487/44 = 0.000565

Moles of C = Moles of CO2 = 0.000565

So,

Mass of C = Moles*MW = 0.000565*12 = 0.00678 g

Moles of H2O = Mass/MW = 0.00582/18 = 0.000323

Moles of H = 2*0.000323 = 0.000646

Mass of H = 0.000646*1 = 0.000646 g

So,

Mass of O = Mass of sample - (Mass of C + Mass of H) = 0.01132-(0.00678+0.000646) = 0.003894 g

% composition is:

C = (0.00678/0.01132)*100 = 59.9%

H = (0.000646/0.01132)*100 = 5.7%

So the empirical formula is C5H5O2.
