Tutored Practice Problem 14.4.6 COUNTS TOWARDS GRADE data Determine half-life, order, and k from The following data were collected for the gas phase decomposition of phosphine at 120 °C. PH3(0-1/4 P4(g) + 3/2 H2(g) [PHjl, M 2.90 10 1.45 102 7.25x10 time,s 027.10 420 31.30 3,63 10 3 54.20 (a) What is the half life for the reaction when [PHs]-2.90 102 M? (b) What is the half life for the reaction when [PH3] -1.45 10 M? (c) Is the reaction first order? If so, what is the rate constant for the reaction? (f not first order leave blank). Explanation / Answer

Half life is the time period in which the sample reduces to half of its original amount.

So here :

a) 27.10 s

The sample reduced to half of its initial amount in 27.10 s , so the half life will be 27.10 s

b) 27.10 s

When the [PH3] = 1.45 x10-2 M , it again got halved in the time period of (54.20 - 27.10) = 27.10 s , so the half life is 27.10 s

c)

SInce the half life of the sample is independent of initial concentration , the order of reaction is 1.

So k = 0.693 / t 0.5

k = 0.693 / 27.10

= 2.56 x 10-2 s-1
