Question

In addition to general conclusions, graph temperature versus time for part A and part B and discuss the findings. Discuss the two volumes that were collected in part B. How much (in mL) of each liquid should be obtained from the 1:1 cyclohexane: toluene (by volume) mixture? What is the percent recovery for each of the mixture components? Answer any questions in the procedure. Also include the following: Using Table 1-2 in your Techniques manual, the cover of your lab notebook, or the Internet, look up the boiling points for the following co Which of the following mixtures could be separated using simple distillation? (there might be more than one correct answer.) 1. Acetone and aniline a. b. c. d. Hexanes and toluene Cyclohexane and cyclohexanol Butyl acetate and butanol 2. Given that the greater the surface area of the the more vaporization/condensation cycles occur, when packing a fractionating column, there are glass beads of two different sizes for you to choose. Which one will give you a more efficient fractional senaration he hi

Boiling point of acetone=56 oC

Boiling point of Aniline=184.1 oC

Boiling point of hexane=68 oC

Boiling point of Toluene=110.6 oC

Boiling point of cyclohexane=80.74 oC

Boiling point of cyclohexanol=161.8 oC

Boiling point of butyl acetate=126 oC

Boiling point of butanol=117.7 oC

For best seperation using simple distillation, the temperature difference between two liquids must be greater than 70 oC.

a. Temperature difference between Acetone and Aniline=184.1-56=128.1 oC

Hence, they can be easily seperated using simple distillation.

b. Temperature difference between Hexane and Toluene=110.6-68=42.6 oC

Although, they can be seperated using simple distillation but the outcome would not be great! Hence, simple distillation should not be used to seperate them.

c. Temperature difference between Cyclohexane and Cyclohexanol=161.8-80.74=81.06 oC

They can be easily seperated using simple distillation.

d. Temperature difference between butyl acetate and Butanol=126-117.7=8.3 oC

They cannot be seperated using simple distillation.
