Question

1a.  A prevailing pressure of one standard atmosphere will support a column of mercury 760 mm in height. Liquid gallium has a density of 6.20 g/mL. The height of a column of liquid gallium that one standard atmosphere can support is ____mm.

The density of liquid mercury is 13.6 g/mL.

1b. A sample of hydrogen gas at a pressure of 0.727 atm and a temperature of 28.9 °C, occupies a volume of 19.3 liters. If the gas is allowed to expand at constant temperature to a volume of 26.0 liters, the pressure of the gas sample will be ____atm.

1c. A sample of argon gas at a pressure of 0.588 atm and a temperature of 22.6 °C, occupies a volume of 12.0 liters. If the gas is compressed at constant temperature to a volume of 9.38 liters, the pressure of the gas sample will be  atm.

Explanation / Answer

1a

P-mercury = density of Hg * gravity * height

P-Gallium = density of Ga * gravity * height

then

P-Gallium =P-mercury

density of Ga * gravity * height = density of Hg * gravity * height

density of Ga * * height = density of Hg * * height

6.20 * height = 13.60 * 760

height of Ga =  13.60 * 760/6.20 = 1667.09 mm Ga

Q2

P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2

T1 = T2 so

P1V1= P2V2

0.727*19.3 = P*26

P2 = 0.727*19.3 /26 = 0.5396 atm

Q3

P1V1 = P2V2

substitute

0.588 * 12 = P*9.38

P =0.588 * 12 /9.38

P = 0.75223 atm
