Question

4A) Electrons are moving horizontally in a vertical magnetic field and follow a circular path. If the strength of the field is 1.1 G, what is the time required for each electron to complete a single orbit?

4B) A beam of electrons moving in the x direction at 8.4 106 m/s enters a region where a uniform magnetic field of 140 G points in the y direction. The region has a distinct straight boundary. The beam curves around due to the field. What is the furthest from the edge of the region that the electron beam penetrates?

Explanation / Answer

4A) F= qvB = mv^2/r

qB = mv/r

r/v = qB/m    ------------(1)

T = 2r/v = 2qB/m = (9.1*10^-31)/ (2*3.14*1.6*10^-19*1.1*10^9) = 8.23*10^-22 s

4B) From (1),

r/v = qB/m

r= qB/mv = (1.6*10^-19*140*10^9)/(9.1*10^-31*8.4*10^6) = 2.9*10^15 m
