Question
A thin has a focal length of 25.0 cm. Locate the image when the object is placed 28.0 cm in front of the lens. (Enter a negative distance if the image is in front of the lens.) cm from the lens Choose the correct description of the image. (Select all that apply.) inverted enlarged reduced virtual real upright Locate the image when an object is placed 23.0 cm in front of the lens. (Enter a negative distance if the image is in front of the lens, cm from the lens Choose the correct description of the image. (Select all that apply.) reduced virtual enlarged real inverted uprightExplanation / Answer
a)
Focal length, f = 25 cm
Object distance, u = 28 cm.
Take the image distance as v.
Using the formula, 1/u + 1/v = 1/f,
1/v = 1/f - 1/u = 1/25 - 1/28 = 3/700
v = 233.33 cm
The image is real since light rays converge at that point.
Image is inverted since the v/u is positive, which is in the opposite side of the lens.
Image is enlarged since v/u is greater than 1

b)
Focal length, f = 25 cm
Object distance, u = 23 cm.
Take the image distance as v.
Using the formula, 1/u + 1/v = 1/f,
1/v = 1/f - 1/u = 1/25 - 1/23 = -2/575
v = -287.5 cm
The image is virtual since light rays are not converging at that point.
The image is upright since v/u is negative.
The image is enlarged since |v/u| is greater than 1
