Question

You are on a cruise ship travelling north at a speed of 9 m/s with respect to land. If you walk north toward the front of the ship, with a speed of 2.7 with respect to the ship, what is your velocity with respect to the land? If you walk south toward the back of the ship, with a speed of 1 with respect to the ship, what is your velocity with respect to the land? Your friend is sitting on another cruise ship travelling south at 11 m/s. As you walk toward the back of your ship at 1 m/s, what is your velocity with respect to your friend?

Explanation / Answer

1) If you walk east toward the front of the ship, with a speed of 1 m/s with respect to theship, what is your velocity with respect to the ground?

9 m/s + 2.7 m/s = 11.7 m/s North

2) If you walk south toward the back of the ship with a speed of 1 m/s with respect to the train, what is your velocity with respect to the ground

9m/s - 1 = 8 m/s North

3) Your friend is sitting on another train traveling west at 11 m/s. As you walk toward the back of your train at 1 m/s, what is your velocity with respect to your friend

v1 + v2 = + 8 m/s + (-11 m/s) = - 3 m/s = 3 m/s north
