Question

Consider the following data on some weak acids and weak bases: acid base name formula name formula hydrocyanic acid HCN 4.9 x 10 -10| | aniline |C6H5NF 214.3×10-10 hypochlorous acid|HCIO | 3.0x10-8-ammonia | NH3 |1.8×10-5 Use this data to rank the following solutions in order of increasing pH. In other words, select a 'l' next to the soluti the solution that will have the next lowest pH, and so on. solution pH choose one 0.1 M NaCIo 0.1 M NH4Br 0.1 M C6H5NH3CI choose one choose one 0.1 M KCN choose one

Explanation / Answer

Strong acids will hav weaker conjugate bases and weaker acids will have strong conjugate base.

Accordingly, conjugate base of weaker acid willhave hgih pH and conjugate acid of weaker base will be having low pH.

Higher Ka value indicates weak acid. Accordingly, HCN is weaker acid than HClO. The conjugate base of HCN is CN- ( from HCN) and its pH will be giher than the conjugate base of HClO, which is ClO-.

since all the concentrations of the components are same,

so CN- will have maxium pH compared to ClO-. So pH of KCN> PH of NaClO.

the pkb data of Aniline and Ammonia indicate the conjugate acid of Aniline is C6H5NH3+ is strong acid than the conjugate acid of NH3 which is NH4+. so pH of CH5NH3+ is less than that of NH4+. ( since pH is -ve logaritm of concentration of hydrogen ions, stronger the acid, less the pH and vice versa).
