Question
You cannot find the balance to weigh your sample of glycine, NH2CH2COOH, but by a miracle you know how many O atoms you have in your sample. So if you have 5.61 × 10-0 atoms, what mass of glycine do you have? (Clearly indicate your steps.) 6. 7. A bottle of Jolt Cola contains 0.280 g of caffeine, C&HioN4O2.; Calculate the number of moles of caffeine, and the number of N atoms, in 0.280 g of caffeine. For questions a) - d) indicate whether each of the following statements is true or false, and briefly explain your reasoning. a) On average, one Li atom weighs 6.941 g. b) Every H atom weighs 1.008 amu. c) A certain mass of solid Na contains fewer atoms than the exact same mass of g d) The average atomic mass of an unknown monatomic gas is 0.045 g/mol. 8. aseous neon.Explanation / Answer
6)
number of moles of O atom = number of O / Avogadro’s number
= (5.61*10^22)/(6.022*10^23)
= 0.09316 moles
one molecule of glycine has 2 atoms of O
So,
moles of glycine = (1/2)*number of moles of O atom
= (1/2)*0.09316 moles
= 0.04658 moles
Molar mass of NH2CH2COOH = 1*MM(N) + 5*MM(H) + 2*MM(C) + 2*MM(O)
= 1*14.01 + 5*1.008 + 2*12.01 + 2*16.0
= 75.07 g/mol
we have below equation to be used:
mass of NH2CH2COOH,
m = number of mol * molar mass
= 0.04658 mol * 75.07 g/mol
= 3.50 g
Answer: 3.50 g
