Question

Experiment 13 Pre-Laboratory Assignment Acid-Base Titration Name: Due Before Lab Begins Complete these exercises after reading the experiment but before coming to the labora tory to do it. 1. Determine the molarity of a solution prepared by dissolving 0.198 g of "KHP (see lab writeup for its formula) in enough water to make 125 mL of solution. 2. When the solution in question 1 is titrated with aqueous sodium hydroxide, the end- point is reached after the addition of 27.80 mL of base solution. How many moles of NaOH reacted? What is the concentration of the NaOH? 3. A student titrates potassium hydrogen phthalate ("KHP" CBHOK) with sodium hydroxide, a strong base. Write a complete ionic equation for this reaction.

Explanation / Answer

1. molarity of KHP = grams/molar mass x volume

                              = 0.198 g/204.22 g/mol x 0.125 L

                              = 0.008 M

2. NaOH used = 27.80 ml

moles NaOH = moles KHP = 0.008 M x 0.125 L = 0.001 mol

molarity of NaOH solution = moles/L of solution

                                          = 0.001 mol/0.02780 L

                                          = 0.036 M

3. complete ionic equation,

K+(aq) + HC8H4O4-(aq) + Na+(aq) + OH-(aq) ---> C8H4O4^2-(aq) + K+(aq) + H2O(l) + Na+(aq)
