Question

How are colligative properties related to either a weak or strong electrolyte, provide an example of each? From the following: pure water, solution of C12H22O11 (m=0.01) in water, solution of NaCl (0.01) in water, solution of CaCl2 (m=0.01) in water. determine: a) highest freezing point, b) lowest freezing point, c) highest boiling point, and d) lowest boiling point. Explanation / Answer

How are colligative properties related to either a weak or strong electrolyte, provide an example of each?

weak eletrolytes --> there is direct correlation to the molality of the solute. Example is glucose or ethanol, will not dissociate

strong electrolytes --> they are directly correlated to the vant hoff coefficient and their "apparent" molarity, "i*molal)

example is NaCl --> 2ions, or CaCl2 --> 3 ions

From the following: pure water, solution of C12H22O11 (m=0.01) in water, solution of NaCl (0.01) in water, solution of CaCl2 (m=0.01) in water. determine:

a) highest freezing point,

C12H22O11 since it will not depress it that much as NaCl or CaCl2, therefore, the least depressed point, i.e. the highest freezing point

b) lowest freezing point,

CaCl2 --> since it has 3 ions, will decrease the freezing point in 3x factor

c) highest boiling point,

highest BP --> CaCl2, since it has the most ions, therefore, increeases the most the BP

d) lowest boiling point.

once again, this is C12H22O11 since it will not be able to increase the BP due to its low apparent molality
