Question

c) Place the conductance apparatus back in the H2SO, solution. Now add small amounts of the Ba(OH2 solution to the sulfuric acid solution while stirring with a glass rod. With each addition, a pink color will appear and then disappear. As the amount of Ba(OH)2 solution added approaches the volume of H2SO4 used, the pink color of the phenolphthalein indicator will become more persistent. At this point, add Ba(OH)2 a drop at time, while stirring, until the light goes out. Then add additional Ba(OH)2 to make the light come back on. Record your observations and EXPLAIN what happened (What Ions cause any conductance?) in each of the following cases given that: H2SO, + Ba(OH)2 sulfuric barium hydroxide BaSO4 (solid) + 2H,0 barium sulfate water acid +2 2 With H2SO4 in excess With equivalent amounts ofHaso, and Ba(OH)2-BaSoy + 2H2O With Ba(OH)2 in excess.

Explanation / Answer

(a) when H2SO4 is in excess than final solution will contain H2SO4 , BaSO4 and water so conductance is due to aqueous solution of H2SO4 . it means conductance is due to H+ , SO42- and OH- (from water).   BaSO4 is a solid so will not contribute in conductance.

(b) when equivalent amoount of H2SO4 and BaSO4 is present than reaction would get complete and colution will contain only products BaSO4 and water and hence BaSO4 is a solid so will not contribute in conductance so conductance is due to ions of water (i.e. H+ and OH- )

(c) (a) when Ba(OH)2 is in excess than final solution will contain Ba(OH)2  , BaSO4 and water so conductance is due to aqueous solution of Ba(OH)2 it means conductance is due to Ba2+ and OH- and H+ (from water).   BaSO4 is a solid so will not contribute in conductance.
