Question
3) To ionize Mg to Mg costs two times as much energy as to form Mg'. The formation of O2- is endothermic rather than extothermic as for O. Nevertheless, magnesium oxide is always formulated as Mg2 O2 rather than Mg 'O a) Give theoretical reason for formulation of Mg? O2 b) B. What simple experiment could be done to predict that magnesium oxide was not Mg O? 8 4) Platinum hexafluoride (PtFs) has an electron affinity more than twice as great as fluorine. Yet when lithium reacts with PtFo, the crystalline product is Li F and not Li'PtF. Explain 6Explanation / Answer
a)
The theoretical reason is mainly du eot stoichiometry and noble gas configurations.
Mg+ and O- will NOT have the noble gas configuratoin, they will have a an electron pending to be moved.
This valenc eelctron of Mg will be atracted by Oxygen, sinc eit is much more electronegativ, so O2- is formed
therefore, Mg2+ is also present
b)
Any type of electrolysis, i.e. addition of charge, will help us to understant the ratoi between species
i.e.
MgO + 2e- = Mg(s) + O2(g)
note that electricity will split Mg an dO2, we can relate total charge with charg eof electron, to the moles of MgO used
if ratio is 1:2 then this is correct, otherwise, will show 1:1 ratio implies Mg+ + O-
