(105 pts) Compound Color These six transition metal compounds: () hexaamminechromium(II) nitrate red (Giv) hexacyanochromium(II) nitrate orangs (ii) hexaaguachromium(IIl) nitrate yellow (v) hexafluorochromium(IID) nitrate green (ii) hexachlorochromium(II) nitrate blue. (vi) hexathiocyanatochromium(II) nitrate pu ple each exhibit a different color: Blue green orange purple dyelow (a) Match each compound with its probable color (b) Explain the basis of your answers to part (a): (c) [Cu(H20)o]Clh is blue in color. Another [CulExplanation / Answer
b) Colors of these complexes are due to transistion between ground states and higher energy levels
electronically, as the metal oxidizes the color also changes. It also depends on the oxidation
state of the metal ion present.
c) According to crystal field theory CN- is a strong field ligand and Cl- is weak field ligand ,
hence CN- will have large and will absorb higher energy giving a lighter color.
Therefore Cl- will give a green color complex.
d) Certain complexes absorb a color in the visible region and reflect another color. The reason behind
this is that we see or observe reflections coming from the complex hence we percieve that color.
