Question

EXPERIMENT 19 (eontinuedNAME Hask of air is heated, stoppered in the heated condition, and then A ool back to room temperature. Answer the following condition RE to cool back to fask contain the same, more, or fewer gas molecules now compared o the 1Does before it was heated? Is the volume occupied by the gas in the flask less than before it was heated? tely the same, greater, 2. ure in the flask the same, greater, or less than before the flasi heated? of the above conditions explain why water rushed into the flask 4. Do any lower temperature in the experiment? Amplify your answer. at the 5 On the graph you plotted, (a) At what temperature does the extrapolated line intersect the -e (b) At what temperature does Charles' law predict that the extrapolated line should intersect the x-axis?

Explanation / Answer

b)

1. Flask contains fewer amount of gas molecules after heating of flask as compared to before heating of flask. It is because whenever any gas or air is heated, it expands. In this case, flask is open, therefore some of has molecules must have gone out of flask for sake of expansion, therefore, it contains less no. of gas molecules than previous case.

2. Volume of gas would be same as its a flask which has been stoppered after heating. But as said earlier that after heating, gas expands, so volume of gas has increased immediately after heating. After stoppered, as flask cools down, volume of gas should have been slightly decreased.

3. Pressure in the flask must have been decreased as compared to before heating of flask. As no. of molecules has been decreased in flask, pressure will also decrease.

4. Condition of decrease in volume will explain rushing of water inside of flask. Air inside of flask has been heated. Before of heating, it must have contained some amount of moisture. Rather in most of cases, air has some amount of moisture. After cooling of flask, tgia moisture will get convert into water droplets. Therefore, water can be seen inside of flask after cooling came from air. This is also one of the cause of decrease in volume of air after cooling of flask.
